In Translation was created to provide a central database of Spanish to English theater translations by gathering diffuse and often difficult-to-find information on translators and their translations. The site features several translated plays that can be downloaded in their entirety, as well as information on where to find other works in translation. In Translation also includes a listing of literary translators specializing in drama and a page of Resources and Related sites.
In Translation grew from ideas arising in Casa de América's First Theater Translation Conference held in Madrid in October 2002, which envisioned a space that could serve as a nexus for translators, playwrights, agents, theaters, publishers, and others interested in drama, in order to cultivate inter-cultural communication and facilitate joint projects to bring new and diverse plays to the attention of English-speaking audiences.
Translations is a database of Spanish to English theater translations listed by author. The database may be searched by author, original title, or translated title. The list is updated regularly, as existing translations are added or new translations become available. Certain plays are available to download and include relevant information regarding rights. This database is currently under expansion to include synopses and character breakdowns for the plays listed.
Translators is an alphabetical listing of literary translators who work with drama. Brief information is provided on experience, areas of interest, and how to contact each translator.
Resources features selected links to other web sites of interest, where information can be found on performances, conferences, workshops, grants and other support for theater translation, as well as publications and theaters that often provide a space for translations or may be useful for translators.
Contact us may be used to send any comments or questions regarding the site and related materials. We welcome information regarding translators and their translations and accept submissions for publication throughout the year.
